Read what Britain’s thirteen year olds have been writing to the Prime Minister in 2013.

Dear Prime Minister For a very long time I have been thinking about health and fitness for teenagers. At 13 our bodies go through many changes and it is so important to stay fit and healthy even though we may have a few spots and greasier hair! Sadly there are many things that influence how teenagers eat today. From the ads for McDonald's and Kentucky fried chicken to working parents not being home to enjoy meals with. I even know some 13 year olds who don't have a table and eat meals on the sofa whilst watching tv. The range of foods available at school too are not seasonal and pizza and chips seems to be on the menu most days. One of my cousins lives in Italy and they enjoy a set 3 course school lunch each day. It starts with melon and Italian ham, followed by a pasta dish - not too much - and a small pastry or a piece of fresh fruit for pudding. That's it. I have to admit all of her friends appear fit and healthy. I would like to have a cafeteria like they have in American schools (I used to live there for a bit) offering salads and fresh fruit. That way if you chose to have salad, friends wouldn't judge you or make fun of you or call you anorexic. We could have some unhealthy foods once a week, like a Friday. Wednesday is "roast" day at my school and is the most dreaded day of the week. The teachers act like its so nice and delicious to try and get us to eat it but to be honest I would much prefer if we didn't have to eat a pork slice and frozen peas thank you very much. My school has recently changed my curriculum and I now go through a whole week without doing any sports or PE just more maths, then in the second week I have 6 PE SESSIONS! That's a double on a Tuesday and 50 mins on the other days. We cover everything from rounders to running, netball and rugby. Surely, we would all be fitter if we did exercise each day. Yes our PE kits would get rather sweaty and cause our parents a load of extra washing, but it should be worth it regarding our health. Gyms should offer free membership or heavily discounted to all children of 13, and a great selection of classes between 3.30 and 5.30 - before the grown ups want to use it. Anyways if you are reading this I hope that you understand that schools in this country are still not quite 'there' yet and we need to do some thing about it. Yours sincerely Bella
